Bum Steer Award
Texas Monthly reveals the 2015 Bum Steer of the Year
With December comes the holidays, time spent with loved ones, poignant end-of-year reflections — and Texas Monthly's Bum Steer Award. As always, there were many contenders this year, but only one was deemed worthy of the esteemed (is esteemed the right word?) honor. Ladies and gentlemen, your 2015 Bum Steer is ... Wendy Davis and the Texas Democratic Party.
Written by the magazine's editorial staff, the announcement points to another banner year for Texas politicians behaving in Bum Steer fashion. While no one can forget Rick Perry's totally glam mugshot or Ted Cruz's annoying ability to be, well, Ted Cruz, no one fell as far at the Texas Dems.
Says the TM staff, "Nothing, and we mean nothing, could match the train wreck that was Wendy Davis, Battleground Texas and the Democrats." Citing Davis' ability to turn a nationally energized (and funded) campaign into a cringe-inducing spectacle, TM notes that the former state senator scored 270,499 fewer votes than Democrat Bill White did in the 2010 gubernatorial election.
Despite the Democrats flailing, the magazine says it was overall a very well-behaved year. "So many of our usual suspects behaved themselves (more or less) that we wondered if something was amiss. Texas A&M didn’t do anything too Aggie-like, the Dallas Cowboys were actually in the playoff hunt for a change and Matthew McConaughey minded his p’s and q’s while picking up an Oscar along the way."
