Don't toss it, mulch it: Austin Christmas tree recycling programs begin now
Wait, hang onto that tree! As the holiday season winds down and the amount of trash rises, Austin is hoping to divert some of its holiday waste away from local landfills.
Beginning immediately, Austin Resource Recovery (formerly Solid Waste Services) will pick up all trees with yard trimmings on regularly scheduled collection days. They are then recycled along with yard trimmings to make Dillo Dirt. Residents who do not have City of Austin trash service, including apartment and condo residents, can recycle their trees by dropping them off in Zilker Park from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Jan. 7, 18, 14 and 15.
Trees collected at Zilker are recycled into mulch, which is made available free on a first-come, first-served basis to Austin residents in mid-January.
Christmas tree recycling guidelines:
- All trees 6 feet or taller should be cut in half (only for curbside collection)
- Remove all ornaments, decorations, lights and the tree stand
- Do not place tree in a “tree bag” before setting on the curb
- Only real Christmas trees may be recycled
