Newt Gingrich fails Campaigning 101 in porn prank: When a domain name becomes apolitical weapon
News to Newt: You shouldn't have left www.NewtGingrich.com unattended.
The real Republican hopeful hosts his campaign site at Newt.org, so American Bridge 21st Century, a Democratic PAC, scooped up the domain name last week and set it up for a prank. At each click, the site redirects to feature Newt Gingrich low points and weak spots in his struggle for the presidential nomination.
Some are subtle, like a "Greece Travel Guide" website or the Tiffany & Co. splash page, but others are a bit more blatant: An article entitled "Gingrich's Campaign Still Looks an Awful Lot Like a Book Tour," from the Atlantic Wire; a 2008 ad for WeCanSolveIt.org, a climate change collaboration with then house speaker Nancy Pelosi; a story about granting and then retracting an "Entrepreneur of the Year" award to the owner of a pornographic DVD store — giving a new meaning to "economic stimulation."
A redirect to Freddie Mac reminds supporters and skeptics of Gingrich's $1.6 to $1.8 million consulting deal with the mortgage lender, and an article published after the mass exodus of his advisers speaks to the volatility of his campaign.
With Gingrich still neck and neck with Mitt Romney in the big race, will these reminders of his past make a difference over these next few months?
