Austin airport update plans include parking, a new concourse, and more
Austin travelers, get ready for more updates at the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport.
On January 10, members of Austin's Airport Advisory Committee met to discuss plans for upcoming renovations, including a new parking garage, concourse, and an expansion to the arrival/departure gates.
The airport is currently accepting bidding offers through February 2 for the parking garage. Starting in March, the arrival/departure gates will be expanded to create easier access to this new area.
Additionally, a new Concourse B will be constructed along with a direct connector to the Barbara Jordan Terminal. The concourse will be built in a phased approach, with the first phase – 10 new gates – completed by 2030. This will bring the airport's total gate count to 43 by 2030.
The starting point for the airport is already strong. In December of 2023, a travel study found that AUS was the fourth-best airport for layovers. (We guess that's if you can figure out the ride share situation quickly for the first time.) It's also seeing record numbers of travelers, so the expansions seem to be needed.
However, the airport has also been under scrutiny for safety concerns, as multiple near misses have occurred in the past several months. There was also an employee death in October, which family have attributed to the anger of another worker, and OSHA and Austin police are investigating.
