Four more days of Free
Cumbia, metal and comedy: Four more free shows to see in the four Free Week daysthat remain
Free Week 2012 is in full swing and busy it has been. As we look toward the last half of the local tradition. CultureMap would like to highlight four more shows coming up in the last four days that have grabbed our attention.
Comedy Showcase and Free Beer at Chupacabra Cantina (Wednesday, 9:30 p.m.)
Half way through the music filled week, why not change things up a bit and check out some live comedy? Chupacabra Cantina is having a stand-up night, and they’ve made sure it will stand tall next to local bands.
The showcase features eleven different Austin comics, hosted by open-mic alumn Josh Staab, and to make the funny even better, they’re offering free beer with a “small donation." Laughter and beer: truly some of of life's greatest treasures.
Bombasta vs. Afrofreque at Flamingo Cantina (Friday, 9 p.m.)
Stop by another of Austin’s cantinas Friday night and watch two funked out, reggae-fueled hip-hop acts share the stage. The two cumbia bands will be alternating sets all night, and hopefully, as the event implies, engage in a friendly battle of sound.
Metal Matinee Show at The Mohawk (Saturday, 4 p.m. - 7 p.m.)
Two of the events on this list are on the same day, but it’s entirely possible — and recommended — to check them both out.
The first is a mid-day metal show at The Mohawk, which will be as awesome as it sounds. With seven bands (three inside and four outside), the venue might not survive all the mayhem. Taking on Poseidon (in) and Waking The Colossus (out) will be headlining the show, and once they’re all wrapped up you can head to The North Door for...
A Tribe Called Quest Tribute with DJ Chorizo Funk and Nick Nack at The North Door (Saturday, 7 p.m.)
I really had to resist inserting a modified Tribe lyric here, but out of respect for the legendary crew (and to prevent all the justified eye-rolling), I didn’t.
But that shouldn’t stop you from heading out to The North Door (in the alley behind ND Studios) Saturday evening to check out DJ Chorizo Funk and Nick Nack mixing and mashing some of the hip-hop pioneer’s classics. Remixes, b-sides, mash-ups and samples — all Tribe, all night. So take an excursion, check the rhyme and clap your hands to the vibes and stuff, while enjoying a little electric relaxation Saturday at the North Door. That wasn’t too bad, right?
There you have it, four more events to fill the tail end of your already packed free week. Just remember, at free shows, your tips for the waitstaff become even more valuable. That being said, have fun and be safe. See y'all out there.
