Film and Beer
5th Annual Off-Centered Film Festival: Western classics, irreverent comedy andcrafty microbrews
There are those who enjoy good craft beer and the Old West, and there are those who do not belong in this world.
For the former, Alamo Drafthouse and Dogfish Head are teaming up once again to bring you the 5th Annual Off-Centered Film Festival, this Thursday through Saturday.
The collaborative effort focuses on pairing two of man's greatest creations: film and beer. Not just any beer, though. The kind that doesn't control nearly half of the U.S. market. The kind that pays careful attention to every aspect of the brewing process, adding unique ingredients and incorporating a variety of brewing techniques. The kind that produces weird and daring beverages that can justify a $10 per four pack price tag.
To celebrate the fifth year of the festival, Drafthouse and Dogfish have chosen a western theme: a fitting motif for the rogue-like nature of the films and the mostly small brewing companies.
Thursday: Blazing Saddles Quote-Along
The weekend kicks off Thursday (4/19) with a Blazing Saddles quote-along at Republic Square Park, complete with a delicious pot o' beans — you know, for that scene — and a wide selection of bad ass beers on tap from Dogfish and other local breweries (512, Circle, Austin Beer Works, Independence, Live Oak, Jester King and South Austin Brewing among them).
(It just so happens that we have two pairs of tickets to give away to readers. Comment on this post by with your favorite Saddles quote by Wednesday, April 18 at 5 p.m. to enter. You must be 21 or over, beer lovers!)
Friday: Once Upon a Time in the West Beer Feast and Wainy Days party
On Friday (4/20), join Dogfish brewmaster Sam Calaglone — along with special guests David Wain, Ken Marino and Joe Lo Trugllo — for what will surely be OCFF's fifth great beer fest. This year, sit down for a screening of Sergio Leone's meticulously thought out Once Upon a Time in the West, joined with an equally thought out beer/Italian feast. Don't expect any red and white here, instead, some of Dogfish's rarest casks in their cellar.
Later that night, frequent collaborators and comedy legends David Wain, Ken Marino and Joe Lo Trugllo will host a viewing party of Wain's web series Wainy Days. The three actors, who have worked together for over 20 years, can be seen in all kinds of projects together — Starz's canceled way-too-soon Party Down, summer camp classic Wet Hot American Summer, and mid-90s sketch series The State, just to name a few — and their off the wall, completely bizarre comedy fits perfectly at this festival. Expect lots of making out.
Saturday: Shorts competetion
Saturday (4/21), the festival will close with a short-film competition, which requires a certain off-centeredness from the filmmakers. This year will introduce an audience award for ten of the contestants-- all of whom will be on hand to accept their award-- to be selected via online voting. These shorts, which were required to incorporate a Dogfish beer, are certain to be as bizarre and endearing as the Dogfish brews themselves, and should not be overlooked.
All of the events, except for the quote-along, will be held at Alamo's South Lamar location, and tickets for each event are still available but moving fast. Eat, drink and remain off-centered!
