Party Down a little more: AFF and writer Rob Thomas share the show'snever-before-seen pilot
Whenever entertainment journalists start making out lists of TV shows canceled too soon, right behind Arrested Development, you'll usually find the brilliant Rob Thomas-penned gem Party Down.
The unexpected Starz! hit combined the comedic talents of Ken Marino, Jane Lynch, Martin Starr, Lizzy Caplan, Jennifer Coolidge, Kristen Bell, Megan Mullally and new Parks and Recreation stand-out Adam Scott. And, yeah, the writing and production actually live up to all that combined talent.
Each episode of the show stands on its own, but the cast's comedic chemistry continuously builds just as does the expected and satisfying relationship between Caplan's sarcastic Casey and Scott's pessimistic Henry. While the ending makes sense for the short run, viewers are unanimously left wanting more.
And now we're finally getting it. More Party Down.
Wednesday night, Thomas, in connection with Austin Film Festival's Conversations in Film series, returns to Austin to present a never-before screening of the original pilot of the short-lived show. Maybe we'll finally get to see the characters' early acting careers that landed them with the catering company in the first place. Regardless of its content, you're sure to love Thomas's original take on the team.
Afterward, Thomas — a U.T. graduate with an often-discussed love for this city we live in — will discuss his process of writing and pitching a pilot in today's weird entertainment world and how you can transform your pilot into a hit TV series. Maybe he'll also have details about the discussed Party Down reunion movie, too...?
Whether you want to learn from one of the biggest names in the showbiz game or just love the show, this is one of those cool Austin opportunities you don't want to miss.
