Metallica Plays Austin
Metallica announced as headliner for X Games Austin's new Super Stage
Nothing else matters, because X Games Austin revealed Monday that Metallica has been added to the music bill for the 2015 festival, which returns to Circuit of the Americas from June 4-7.
Metallica's X Games appearance was announced through an exclusive Rolling Stone video with the one-and-only skateboarding legend Tony Hawk. "We're excited to get there and X Games has been going on for a while — it's about time," frontman James Hetfield told Hawk in the video. "The music does something to you. When athletes are already really good and the music takes them to another place, you can't explain that."
"Metallica has helped provide the soundtrack for action sports since I can remember," Hawk told Rolling Stone. "Having them play at X Games is huge, so I'll be front and center for their concert."
Metallica will perform on June 6 at the new and improved Super Stage, which promises to serve as a larger, more inclusive venue than the stage that hosted Kanye West and The Flaming Lips last year. Nicki Minaj also plays the Super Stage this year.
In addition to the Super Stage, the Sound Factory Stage presented by KUTX will showcase performances from The Glitch Mob, Deltron 3030, Talib Kweli, Kid Ink and Pennywise. More acts will be released as the festival nears, but KUTX has already curated an impressive local lineup that includes Zeale, Bright Light Social Hour, Walker Lukens, Ume and A. Sinclair.
In conjunction with the Metallica announcement, X Games Austin is throwing a party on Monday, May 11 at The Ranch with Austinite/BMX Park gold medalist Chase Hawk and broadcast partner KLBJ FM.
