Rockabilly Revival: Reverend Horton Heat returns for 5th incarnation of RevivalFestival
Looking for a greasy, slick start to Memorial Day weekend? This Saturday, May 26, marks the return of Revival Festival, an all-things-rockabilly celebration at the edge of Red River's rock and indie-heavy music district.
The fifth incarnation of Revival Festival brings Dallas-based punkabilly gods Reverend Horton Heat as its headliner. Led by Jim Heat, known widely as "The Rev," Reverend Horton Heat's 20-year legacy is built on a cross-genre sound that mixes dirty country roots with a load of punk influence.
When you think of The Rev, it's safe to think of outlaw country's grandson, too. Just like Hank Williams III (who played last year's festival), Reverend Horton Heat's set is a diverse mix of country-to-punk songs that are always gritty and a whole lot less "My Bucket's Got A Hole In It" and more, well, "Bales of Cocaine" and "Marijuana."
Before The Rev's punkabilly gospel shakes downtown Austin, Revival Fest will span the spectrum of rockabilly acts. Austin's own longtime 'billy beauty, Rosie Flores plays a unique brand of Tex-Mex honky-tonk, California-based Lee Rocker brings a polished swing sound and local Smith's tribute band, The Smites will carry the ever-glowing Morrissey torch.
The Smites kick off Revival Fest (taking place at the corner of 7th Street and Trinity) just shy of 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, with Reverend Horton Heat headlining at 11:00 p.m. With sponsors like Pabst Blue Ribbon and Sailor Jerry's, Revival Fest promises to take you back to the early roots of rough country rock, tattoos and pin-ups — at least for one night.
And if you're in need of further revival after The Rev's final licks, we can think of a few prime spots nearby — Mugshots, Lovejoys — for some post-fest brews in an equally slick, gritty environment.
