outdoor films
Get ready for a summer of Cinema East with a launch party at Cheer Up Charlie's
It's summer time again, and in Austin, that means it's time for outdoor movies under the stars. Now in its third year of premiere outdoor independent film offerings, Cinema East is preparing for another great season with 12 new movies and one new outdoor screening venue.
For this year's Cinema East, all films will be shown on the track field of the Yellow Jacket Stadium, across the street from the Millennium Youth Complex on Hargrave Street in East Austin. The new location will allow more nearby parking and larger audiences in comparison to Cinema East's former home at the French Legation Museum.
This year, Cinema East is sponsored by Frank Hot Dogs and GoodPop Popsicles, and both will be present at every Sunday night showing with a specially chosen menu. The screenings are still BYOB, but it's nice to know there are local options if you forget your pic-a-nic basket.
And of course, part of the magic of Cinema East is the themed pre-show DJ dance party sets, provided this year from Mouthfeel and Flying Turns. Then everyone is invited to the TBD afterparties at a nearby east side location for more dancing and more libations.
As always, the films selected for the Sunday night summer screenings are some of the best indie films traveling the festival circuit over the past year. This year's selections have been shown at Sundance, Tribeca, SXSW and Austin Film Festivals, and will be accompanied by some of the films' creators who are happy to answer audience questions after each screening.
(We hear Nick Offerman will be here, for example, during the screening of his latest SXSW favorite, Somebody Up There Likes Me.)
Other films announced so far on the every-other-Sunday schedule include Gayby (June 24), Kid-Thing (July 8) and Sun Don't Shine (July 22).
To see a preview of all 12 movies and snag some cool giveaways from this year's Cinema East sponsors, everyone is invited to the Cinema East Launch Party kicking off the whole she-bang over at Cheer Up Charlie's on Thursday at 9 p.m.
You won't need blankets or lawn chairs quite yet, but we will still suggest the bug spray

Cinema East screenings happen every other Sunday beginning June 10. Tickets are $3.00 at the door.
