Snoop Dogg takes over Stubb’s, and we list his best Texas moments
Whether he’s headlining one of Austin’s most historic stages, or playing inside a giant vending machine at SXSW, perpetually hazy rap icon Snoop Dogg always draws a crowd in the Capitol City.
Maybe it’s the fact that his bass-heavy, original beats appeal to both his fellow stoners and music snobs alike, two communities whose Venn diagram intersection accounts for a large chunk of Austin’s population. Or maybe it’s that, in his 20 years as a performer, with singles from “Gin & Juice” to “Drop It Like It’s Hot” holding on the charts, he’s accrued an army of fans whose love of all things Top Dogg transcends genres.
Though lackluster ticket sales in Lubbock forced Dogg to cancel a show earlier this week, we don’t doubt that droves of fans will show up to support Snoop this Thursday, June 7 at Stubb’s.
In honor of the Doggfather’s show, we’re listing his best (but not necessarily proudest) Texas moments.
Snoop Dogg endorses Texan Tea Partier Ron Paul
In an unexpected (and non-traditional) announcement earlier this year, Dogg voiced his support for Paul on his Facebook page, posting “ a photo of Paul with the words ‘Smoke Weed Everyday.’” While it makes sense that the rapper would back a legislator who’s very much in support of legalization, we hope he has at least one other reason for his choice.

Snoop Dogg joins Dallas rock band Anchored on summer anthem “Throwin’ Down”
The (explicit) single reminds us a little of a Saliva / Kid Rock mash-up, so listen at your own risk, but Snoop’s laid-back narration helps ground the raucous chorus:
Snoop Dogg curses out Texas sheriff
After pal Willie Nelson was arrested for possession, Dogg reportedly publicly lashed out at the arresting officer with an expletive-heavy insult, ending with: “What the f--- you think you got out of arresting Willie Nelson? He got out, and he's back smoking right now."
And, of course:
Snoop Dogg arrested for possession in West Texas, January 2012
In a story that shocked approximately no one, Snoop was arrested at the Texas border this past January after a tour bus search turned up “drug paraphernalia.” Karmically, the Sierra Blanca, Texas checkpoint was the same one Snoop’s pal Willie Nelson got busted at (also for possession, natch) in 2010. (Last November, actor Armie Hammer — who is apparently a real person, and who starred in The Social Network — was also nabbed in Sierra Blanca. Tough town!)
