Celebrate the 90s with the Summerland Tour
On July 6, we’re going back to the 90s.
No, we’re not talking about the temperature (though, yeah, that’ll be up there, too) — we’re talking about the Summerland Tour, the guilty pleasure-fest that’s bringing Everclear, Sugar Ray, Gin Blossoms, Lit and Marcy Playground to ACL Live.
The 25-city tour is a throwback to our happiest high school days, when whatever episode of TRL we happened to catch before field hockey practice inevitably featured the latest single from at least one band on the line-up.
Now, over a decade after each act emerged with their first hits, they still hold up. And while Sugar Ray’s Mark McGrath does more TV hosting than singing these days, Gin Blossoms, Lit and Marcy Playground all still tour — Everclear’s even working on a new album.
In honor of the so-awesome-we-can’t-believe-it-didn’t-happen-sooner tour, let’s take a trip down memory lane with our favorite lesser-known hits from each band:
Everclear – One Hit Wonder
Off 1997’s So Much For The Afterglow, this video features a young Christina Hendricks.
Sugar Ray – Answer The Phone
Released in 2001 (arguably after their peak), this single is simple and poppy, but so catchy I still sometimes sing it in my head when I’m making calls.
Lit – Over My Head
At first, I couldn’t remember anything other than the “things I said when I was drunk” song, until I remembered this single, which also appeared on the Titan A.E. soundtrack.
Gin Blossoms – Allison Road
Originally appearing on debut album Up & Crumbling, “Allison Road” was re-recorded for the band’s breakout hit New Miserable Experience.
Marcy Playground – It’s Saturday
Off 1999’s Shapeshifter, “It’s Saturday” is grunge-pop at its best.
