Austin may not typically be thought of as a big ballroom city, but there is one annual ball that is so glitzy, so over the top, so queer, and so downright majestic, that it is certainly worth attending. The Paramount Theatre's Majestic Ball is the premier mainstream ball hosted in this city each year, and it's returning June 21.
Tickets ($24 for GA, $75 for VIP) for the Majestic Ball are now on sale. This summer's event is themed "Mythological Mayhem."
The Paramount Theater will be completely transformed into a lights-flashing, music-blaring ballroom full of sirens, muses, demi-gods, giants, and more. Think disco meets Mount Olympus. The evening will include otherworldly acts by drag divas Diamond Dior Davenport and Kennedy Davenport (of RuPaul’s Drag Race). The ball itself will be hosted by Austin local and the Legendary Mother of the House of Lepore, Natalie Lepore.
Attendees are encouraged to don their Grecian finest, and all are invited to compete on stage in a variety of categories where up to $5,000 in cash prizes is up for grabs. Of course guests can simply sit back and watch the show, celebrating some of Texas' most beloved QPOC artists and reveling in a night of fun. That's necessary, if not an outright act of rebellion, in a state that consistently devalues queer folks.
“Now, the largest ball in Texas, we’re back for year four and it’s going to be bigger than ever," said Majestic Ball creator and co-producer Ryan Thompson in a press release. "This event has become an Austin Pride Month staple and something the ballroom community travels from all over Texas to attend. The Majestic Ball is more than a party; it is a time to celebrate the colorful and talented queer community. It is a time where the often outcasted get to take center stage and show everyone just how extraordinary they are."
