CultureMap Exclusive: gAyCL's awesome surprise guest announced
- Special guest, Austin rapper G-BabyPhoto by: Sandy Carson
The lineup for Friday's gAyCL event at Cheer Up Charlie's just got even better. Besides local favorites Follow That Bird, Rickey Jean Francois, Kay Leotard, Agent Ribbons and newcomers The Great Aware, the surprise guest will be BET's flyest female rapper, G-Baby.
G-Baby (aka Whitney Perkins) has appeared multiple times on BET's 106 & Park on their popular Freestyle Friday segments, and systematically knocked out her competition with her unmatched talent, style and wit. Perkins is now the first female competitor to make it into the Freestyle Friday Hall of Fame. Even better, she's also the Hall of Fame's first lesbian rapper.
What?! Gay rappers on BET? Is that even allowed? Clearly, yes it is, because G-Baby is legit. Rumor is, she'll be going on BET again in a week to rap battle Eminem. After that, she's just one step away from Elton John, yo.
To know more about what you're getting yourself into when you arrive Friday night, gAyCL is the brain child of host Ezra Edwards (aka Girlfriend) who has helped make Cheer Up Charlie's the East Side's favorite spot for category-free love and continuous alternative music. To make sure the event is entirely pro-homo, the proceeds from the night benefit Equality Texas, a nonprofit organization lobbying for LGBTQ rights in the legislature.
Edwards has been working alongside Cheer Up's owner Tamara Hoover to make sure the evening included an amazing lineup and a chill environment that's one hundred percent free and accessible to everyone. Unlike that other big ol' festival on the other side of town.
"It's been a lot of work, but I really love putting events like this together that everyone is welcome to be a part of," says Edwards. "I'm so proud of it. I keep telling people it's my gay-by."
Come out and welcome Edwards' gay-by into the world at Cheer-Up Charlie's starting at 6pm. G-Baby should take the inside stage around midnight while the DJ keeps spinning outside long into the night.
Come by early or stop by after ACL. After all, everyone's welcome here.
