Local Sounds
Midgetmen, Hello Wheels, The Bare Feat & Befriend the Bears vie for the LastBand Standing title
What's the sound of Austin? CultureMap's first ever Last Band Standing contest started with 16 bands that represent the diverse pockets of the Austin music scene, from outlaw country and traditional bluegrass to soul, funk and pure punk.
Over the last week, your votes have whittled down the Sweet Sixteen to the Final Four: one part punk, one part folk, one part psychedelic rock and one group of youngsters from Austin High. Your votes will determine which bands make it to the finals, ultimately naming the Last Band Standing winner, who will be announced on Oct. 10.
The two finalists will play our Last Band Standing party at The Parish on Wednesday, Oct. 10, featuring local indie favorites, Marmalakes, as the evening's headliner. Voting for Round Three ends Friday at midnight, so take a minute to get acquainted with the remaining bands, then start voting!
Midgetmen vs. Hello Wheels
The Midgetmen's locally-sourced punk rock sound has been a staple in Austin for ten years. For this group of rockers, day jobs may have morphed into careers, and playing shows is more of a chance to have fun and get drunk beers with friends. Though it may be a side gig these days, The Midgetmen's show doesn't disappoint. (See the Weird Al 10th Anniversary tribute show for a proper example.)
A newer addition to the Austin scene, Hello Wheels' boot stompin' acoustic tune sound has been warmly welcomed by local music authorities. Rooted in folk tradition, but not short on alternative influence, Hello Wheels sound has filled Cactus Cafe and graced KUT airwaves.
The Bare Feat vs. Befriend the Bears
Who says talent comes with age? Nine young musicians — who attend Austin High — make up The Bare Feat, a new sound on the Austin scene that incorporates a full horns section, male and female vocals into its unique, youthful aesthetic.
Feel like checking out a "tripped out laser show on your grandparents' back porch"? Look no further than Befriend the Bears, an acoustic folk/psychedelic rock/jazz ensemble that plays a self-described "liberal mix of emotion and musical mess."
CultureMap's Last Band Standing competition runs through Oct. 2. The Last Band Standing winner will be announced at The Parish, and the winning band will receive Artist Badges to ACL Festival. You have the chance to win ACL Fest passes, too. Just vote to register!
