Quirky Austin plumber known for parody ads gets serious with first guitar album
Perhaps Austinites could have guessed there was an artistic mind behind Radiant Plumbing. The name alone is pretty poetic, and the company is well-known (with more than 12,500 Google reviews) for its parody ads and extreme silliness. But a new album by founder and former CEO Brad Casebier reflects a more serious artistic inclination.
In fact, Contemplations could not be more different from an amateur film featuring a ravenous desert toilet in the style of Dune's ferocious sandworms. Casebier's solo album features his own compositions on fingerstyle guitar; dark, but not overly edgy, with elegant instrumental skills couched in high-quality production.
Released a day before the winter solstice, Contemplations' solemn and spacious folk stylings fit right in with the season. Think of it as ambient winter music: The only sounds present around Casebier's guitar are some deep bass tones, textural synths, and a heavily processed, wordless feminine voice by an unknown artist credited as Isumataq.
"I started playing the guitar as a teenager, and I've always found it to be a source of solace and inspiration," said Casebier in a press release. "My music has always helped me to escape and find respite from the busyness of life and business. My desire is that the music on this album can serve others in the same way and offer a tranquil, meditative pause for busy souls."
Contemplations by Brad Casebier
Casebier provides some guiding questions for such meditations on his artist website:
Something I have been thinking about a lot lately.
What is unconditional love?
Can I give that to others?
When have I received unconditional love?
Can I unconditionally love myself?
What would unconditional love for myself look like?
At a glance, track names like "Angst," "Serenade," and "Hand In Hand" seem themselves ripe for parody, but their earnestness points to something that Austinites may be forgetting as the Live Music Capital keeps growing richer in local labels and transplant talent. A musician's spirit can be found anywhere, even when — or in this case after — the hands are occupied in other pursuits.
"Around 25 years old, business and family took up the time that used to be spent playing," writes Casebier on his site, "and the guitar sat mostly unused until I was in the process of resigning as the CEO of the business my amazing wife and best friend Sarah created 23 years earlier. ... In the middle of this transition, I dusted off the guitar, and began a practice of playing daily again."
Radiant Plumbing has been around since 1999, founded with Casebier's wife, Sarah Casebier. The former CEO is still involved in the business as a board member and as-needed for certain projects, including a recent challenge by comedian John Oliver. The Last Week Tonight host challenged Casebier and Radiant to make a parody of the 1999 film Magnolia, and rewarded the team with a $10,000 donation to the Central Texas Food Bank.
