KVUE -- Twenty-four hours later, a goal to raise $1 million for 320 nonprofit organizations in Central Texas was not just surpassed but almost tripled.
According to Amplify Austin's website, the final amount raised for local nonprofits was $2,795,151.
Amplify Austin was a 24-hour online philanthropic initiative. Starting at 7 p.m. Monday, it asked the Central Texas community to give back to the charity of their choice through online donations.
Amplify Austin was created by I Live Here, I Give Here, a local organization dedicated to increasing personal philanthropy by spotlighting the needs in our community and connecting donors with the nonprofits committed to the causes they care about.
People could donate using their computers and smartphones. The minimum donation was $25 and there is no maximum amount.
Supporting a favorite cause came with an automatic boost during the event. All donations were amplified through $160,000 in matching gifts from University Federal Credit Union and Austin Community Foundation. And every hour nonprofits won prize money for garnering the most donors or dollars.
At the end of the 24 hours, Hospice Austin brought in the most donations raising $112,868.
