Hill Country Pierogi: The vendor of sweet and savory nostalgia
Grandchildren of Eastern Europeans rejoice! Your childhood is now available to you in the form of an East Side food trailer offering homemade pierogis and stuffed cabbage. Hill Country Pierogi is not only Austin's first pierogi stand, but the vendor of sweet and savory nostalgia.
Opened in October of 2011 by Brittany Lukowsky, Hill Country Pierogi offers a variety of pierogi, golabki (stuffed cabbage), sandwiches, tacos and delicious desserts. Lukowsky is no stranger to pierogi-making; she is a third generation Pole with years of experience making the Eastern European dumpling. Her food draws crowds young and old, all curious to try her homemade recipe.
My favorite pierogi is the traditional (potato, cheese and onion), which I often compare to the feeling of a thousand happy babushkas dancing in my mouth. I'm not alone in this sentiment; Lukowsky says they have trouble keeping the traditional, bacon (black peppercorn bacon, potato and caramelized onion) and veggie (sauteed mushroom, steamed spinach, gorgonzola and potato) pierogis from running out.
The trailer features local and organic ingredients when possible and they proudly feature Smokey Denmark kielbasa and Aurelia's chorizo.
Hill Country Pierogi is open for lunch and dinner Monday thru Saturday (Sunday is lunch only) and stays open until 3 a.m. on weekends. Delivery is available in the downtown and East Side areas — and don't be surprised if you see Hill Country Pierogi popping up in your favorite local grocery stores soon. Lukowsky is hoping to expand her wholesale side in the near future!
