It's not an overstatement: 2013 was a great year in Austin food. We welcomed a host of buzzworthy new restaurants to the scene. As part of the 2014 Tastemaker Awards, 16 of the best new restaurants in Austin will go head-to-head in our third annual Tastemaker tournament.
CultureMap readers are asked to vote for their favorites in the bracket-style elimination challenge. The 2014 Best New Restaurant winner will be announced at the CultureMap Tastemaker Awards on May 7 at Brazos Hall. Take a moment to get acquainted with the 16 contenders, and then cast your vote. Voting ends on May 2.
Arro
This French-inspired hot spot opened last summer in the former home of Haddingtons. Helmed by Chef Andrew Curren and his wife, Mary Catherine Curren, Arro's highlights include fresh breads (this is the same restaurant group as Easy Tiger, after all) and fresh twists on classic French dishes. Arro is also nominated for the Tastemaker Best Restaurant award.
Barlata
Barlata brings Spanish flavors to South Lamar. Chef Daniel Olivella's menu specializes in shareable food, like tapas, lapas, paellas and large Spanish dishes.
Bonneville
Located in the warehouse district of downtown, Bonneville's cocktails are as buzzed about as the food. This spot is great for an impromptu happy hour that turns into a full, leisurely dinner.
Goodall's
Goodall's hit the scene in 2013 when The Mansion on Judge's Hill got a facelift and new life as Hotel Ella. The new restaurant brings casual and sophisticated cuisine to the West Campus locale. All menu items are seasonally inspired and ingredients are sourced within 512 miles of Austin.
Jeffrey's
Austin's iconic fine dining establishment was given a second chance when it reopened under the skilled hands of Larry McGuire and his hospitality group last year. The result is a refreshing revitalization of a Clarksville favorite, now poised to inspire a new generation of diners. Jeffrey's is also nominated for the Tastemaker Best Restaurant award.
Josephine House
Jeffrey's little sister, Josephine House, became a fast favorite of the al fresco dining crowd when it opened in 2013. On the marble counter, you'll find savory dishes, pastries, breads and desserts just begging for a taste.
No Va
​No Va Kitchen & Bar offers homespun twists on sophisticated classics. Chef Brad Sorenson, who you may recognize from The Next Food Network Star and Chopped, brings diverse dishes to the Rainey Street District.
Odd Duck
Brick-and-mortar Odd Duck, from Chef Bryce Gilmore of Barley Swine fame, opened just before the new year. The bright space on South Lamar houses the beloved casual cuisine that made Gilmore's Odd Duck trailer famous.
Pieous
This pizza is worth the drive to the edge of town — and so are the surprisingly delicious sandwiches. Make sure you save room for a dessert pie (and a cold brew).
Qui
This is one restaurant that needs no introduction. The flagship East Austin restaurant of Top Chef winner Paul Qui took Austin by storm in 2013. Must-have dishes at this hot spot include the Rabbit 7 Ways and the cheddar cheese ice cream sandwich. Qui is also nominated for the Tastemaker Best Restaurant Award.
Ramen Tatsu-ya
Ramen Tatsu-ya has wowed foodies with its delectable Ramen offerings in North Austin. Now, the restaurant is planning a second location in South Austin to spread the wealth.
Salt & Time
Salt & Time opened its long awaited butcher shop and salumeria in February 2013. In addition to charcuterie, bacon and salami, you can order from a grab-and-go menu.
Searsucker
Celebrity chef Brian Malarkey's concept restaurant joined the Austin scene last summer. Searsucker's menu is tailored for sharing — an open invitation for diners to sip, savor and linger.
Soto
Located in Cedar Park, Soto specializes in innovative and contemporary Japanese hot plates and sushi rolls, which pair perfectly with craft cocktails and sake socials.
Winebelly
This new South Austin wine and tapas bar was a pleasant find from the same family who owns Vietnamese restaurants, Hai Ky.
Winflo Osteria
Winflo’s charming abode fits perfectly into the West Sixth corridor. The Italian restaurant offers classic fare made from locally sourced ingredients, as well as a diverse list of Italian wines and craft cocktails.
