It looks like the oldest barbecue joint in Texas will soon be Austin’s newest. Elgin’s Southside Market & BBQ has applied for a wine and beer retailers permit with the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission for a location at 10515 N. Mopac Expy., Ste. B-225 in the Arbor Walk shopping center. The timeframe for the opening is unclear. CultureMap has reached out to the restaurant for more information.
Toss Pizzeria and Pub opened a second location at 11905 Bee Cave Rd., Ste. 100 on July 25. The locally owned spot serves the same menu as the original South First Street location, including New York-style pies, wings, and garlic knots.
It’s out with brunch and in with banchan and barbecue at East Austin’s Pitchfork Pretty. The acclaimed eatery is discontinuing its Sunday daytime service in order to accommodate a second helping of its popular Korean-inspired prix fixe. The last brunch will take place from 10 am to 2 pm on August 4. The new Sunday evening is from 5-10 pm starting August 18.
The new District Kitchen + Cocktails on Anderson Lane has started opening up at 11 am for lunch. The menu combines easy dishes like roasted chicken tacos, poke bowls, and internationally inspired sandwiches with more decadent mains like a Wagyu steak served with lemon tahini sauce and green chili pork served with roasted red potatoes and corn tortillas.
A young Austin chef will be among the contestants battling it out on Food Network’s Kids Baking Championship this summer. Eleven-year-old Dharma Sabapathy will try to impress Duff Goldman and Valerie Bertinelli on the way to winning a $25,000 grand prize. Cheer him on starting August 5 at 8 pm.
Former Juniper executive chef Amanda Turner, the 2019 winner of the CultureMap Tastemaker Award for Rising Star Chef of the Year, has joined the team at Jester King Kitchen as chef de cuisine. Turner’s appointment will allow the brewery to expand its culinary operations, including starting bread, charcuterie, and fermented vegetable programs.
Speaking of staff shuffles, Batch Craft Beer & Kolaches has named Madison Reis as its new pastry chef. The appointment coincides with the launch of new breakfast hours starting at 7 am on weekdays and 9 am on weekends. Breakfast kolaches such as ham, egg, and cheese, and an egg and sausage with maple-infused dough will be available daily during the service.
