Whole Foods Market announced that it will open its fifth Austin location on January 15, 2014, at the Domain. The new store will be the second largest in Austin, behind the flagship Whole Foods on Lamar Boulevard, which is currently undergoing renovations.
The company is projecting that the new store will bring nearly 300 jobs to the Austin area. "This is an exciting opportunity for our shoppers and team members," said Mark Dixon, president for the company’s Southwest region.
After announcing plans for the new Domain locale, some North Austin residents were worried that Whole Foods would shutter the smaller Gateway location that sits less than three miles away. In a press release, Dixon assured the neighborhood that the Gateway Whole Foods would remain open for the foreseeable future.
"After careful consideration, we’ve made the decision to keep the Gateway store open," he said. "Our guests have told us that they’d like to continue shopping at Gateway. Every store is unique and offers shoppers an experience unlike any other grocery store."
The new Whole Foods at the Domain will honor its grand opening with a week long celebration in January.
