Tex-Mex chain Chuy's opens new restaurant in far South Austin

This is the farthest South Chuy's has gone in Austin.
A new Chuy's restaurant brings the local number of locations up to 10, a milestone for the chain's hometown. Located in the Oaks at Slaughter shopping center (126 E. Ralph Ablanedo Dr.), this is the farthest south Chuy's has reached in Austin. It opens April 22.
Most Austinites are already familiar with Chuy's, but a Darden Restaurants, Inc.'s July 2024 acquisition of the chain means it is in a new corporate reality. Darden Restaurants also owns Olive Garden, LongHorn Steakhouse, Yard House, and more. The deal was valued at approximately $605 million. Since then, a new location has opened in Hutto, but it was announced before the deal was.
Chuy’s still promises ingredients that have never been frozen and tortillas made daily in-house. It also still serves up fan favorites like Chicka-Chicka Boom-Boom Enchiladas, sizzling fajitas, and creamy jalapeño dip. Happy hours from 3-6 pm on weekdays include $5 chips with dip, and margarita and other beverage specials.
Every location looks a little different, but they share eclectic decor and some signature art, like schools of wooden fish hanging overhead. This one spans 6,648 square feet with both indoor and outdoor dining on a 48-seat covered patio. The location will also offer curbside pickup.
“Austin is where it all started for Chuy’s, and we’re excited to continue growing in the city that made us who we are,” said Josh Offer, general manager of the new Oaks at Slaughter location, in a press release. “Beyond serving great food, we’re proud to start a partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters to support their mission to uplift and empower local youths in our own backyard.”
The Oaks at Slaughter Lane services a mostly residential area. The new Chuy's will be easily walkable to the Far Out Lounge, which is visible across South Congress Avenue. The 18-acre development also includes an H-E-B.
Chuy's at the Oaks at Slaughter Lane will be open Sundays through Thursdays from 11 am to 9:30 pm, and Fridays and Saturdays from 11 am to 10:30 pm.
