Austin taco and Thai trucks take root together in joint botanical cafe
A new hangout in a horticultural paradise, helmed by two popular Austin restaurant teams, is sprouting up on a five-acre property in Sunset Valley.
Leona Botanical Café and Bar broke ground at 6405 Brodie Ln. in early April, and is expected to open in early 2025. The new concept is a collaboration between Justin and Lakana Trubiana, the husband-and-wife duo behind Thai food truck Dee Dee, along with Veracruz All Natural sisters Reyna and Maritza Vazquez.
The site will host a pavilion and three separate restaurants, including the first brick and mortar location for Dee Dee and an eighth location for Veracruz All Natural.
According to Justin Trubiana in a release, the idea for Leona was first discussed in 2018 while Dee Dee and Veracruz were food truck neighbors in East Austin. The Vazquez sisters and Chef Lakana bonded over their use of childhood favorite recipes and fresh ingredients inspired by their diverse cultures.
"This has been a long journey for us, and we’re excited to finally be able to share what we’ve been working on," said Justin Trubiana. "I know just how excited Lakana is to finally have a proper kitchen where she will be able to share more of her family’s favorite country-style Thai dishes."
According to the release, Leona will be the Vazquez sisters' biggest project to date, following the opening of their first full-service bar and restaurant, Veracruz Fonda and Bar, in April 2023.
"Over the years, we've formed a friendship with Lakana, and our shared vision for this project is nearly here," Reyna Vazquez said in the release. "Witnessing it come to life here in South Austin is truly a dream come true and shows what can happen when women come together and support each other in this industry. We can’t wait to share this special place with the Austin community."
The most standout feature of the Leona property will be the expansive outdoor botanical garden, which will contain more than 7,000 individual plants across 80-plus species upon completion. The Dee Dee and Veracruz teams also decided to preserve more than 90 existing trees on the site to maintain habitats for the area's wildlife. To provide ample shade for guests, and to showcase the diversity of the Texas Hill Country ecosystem, 70 additional trees will be planted on the property.
"Our goal with this project is to create a beautiful space that stays true to our cultures and highlights our upbringing by sharing the traditions we learned from our mothers and grandmothers. We want people to experience a part of our homes,” Lakana Trubiana explained. "I have so much respect and appreciation for all the hard work that Reyna and Maritza have put into creating Veracruz All Natural. It's inspiring to work with like-minded entrepreneurs with similar backgrounds, and I’m thrilled to open this new vision of ours together."
The five-acre property was previously owned by late World War II veteran and philanthropist Betty Grubs, who established the largest-ever scholarship endowment in the history of the University of Texas Women's Athletics program. To honor Grubbs' legacy, the Leona team will host an annual fundraiser for the for the Betty Grubbs Endowed Scholarship Program for the University of Texas Women’s Athletics.
