In 2023, celebrated pitmaster Aaron Franklin and Guerilla Suit creative agency CEO James Moody successfully revived the historic Uptown Sports Club on East Sixth Street. Now, they're celebrating the restaurant's two-year anniversary with a Po'Boy Showdown.
Slated to take place on Saturday, April 12, the Po'Boy Showdown will feature a roster of notable Austin chefs competing for the Guest Winner title. The event will also feature a panel of guest judges, who will select a Critics' Winner.
The event's theme pays homage to Uptown Sports Club's New Orleans-inspired menu, featuring an array of specialty po' boy sandwiches, gumbo, hushpuppies, and other Cajun-focused fare.
Competing chefs include:
- Chef Harold Villarosa, OKO
- Chef Ryan Fox, Knuckle Sandwich
- Chef Mariha Fernando Richmond, La Plancha Mexican Street Food
- Chef Sho Uemura, Canje
- Chef Chris McInnis, JewBoy Sub Shop
- Chef Fermín Nuñez, Suerte
- More to come
Franklin will not compete in the competition. However, the James Beard Award winner will be onsite to join in on the anniversary celebrations.
Tickets for the Po'Boy Showdown are $70 per person. Price of admission includes access to po' boy samples from participating chefs, a chance to vote for a favorite po' boy, specialty desserts from Bésame and OMG Squee, and passed snacks and oysters.
The showdown takes place from 5-9 pm, with a free live concert taking place at 10 pm. Guests at the showdown can purchase beer from Meanwhile Brewing or cocktails from Uptown's full-service bar.
Uptown Sports Club is located at 1200 E. 6th St. Guests can check out the restaurant Mondays through Thursdays from 11 am to midnight, Saturdays from 10 am to 2 am, and Sundays from 10 am to 10 pm.
