the buzz begins
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry reprise first date at Austin club before SXSW panel
It's finally here: South by Southwest (SXSW) and the national media frenzy, we mean. Austinites are sharing the city with celebrities, which makes some locals consider hitting the coolest clubs in hopes of a sighting, and some recoil into a hermetic stupor. (If something in the middle is your aim, check out these fun events that circumnavigate the usual crowds.)
It seems like every time Meghan Markle and Prince Harry step out, every tabloid in the country descends on them, but this time special attention is bestowed. Ahead of the Duchess of Sussex's official SXSW Conference appearance, the couple revisited the Austin version of their first date spot, People Magazine reports. This one is where many notable visitors will be spotted throughout the festival: Soho House.
Meghan is appearing at 1 pm on March 8 to discuss Breaking Barriers, Shaping Narratives: How Women Lead On and Off the Screen, the keynote speech of the day. She joins famous journalist Katie Couric, "Founding Mother and Editor at Large" Errin Haines of the 19th News, actress Brooke Shields, and sociologist Nancy Wang Yuen on the panel.
The write-up discloses that the night before Meghan's appearance, she dined with her husband at a corner table, and an "onlooker" says they seemed to be having a good time, being both "animated" and "low key" amid the festival hum at the upscale social club. The London hub was the venue for the couple's first date, which Harry detailed in his memoir, Spare, as quoted by People:
"Red-cheeked, puffing, sweaty, half an hour late, I ran into the restaurant, into the quiet room, and found her sitting at a small area on a low velvet sofa in front of a low coffee table."
He also noted her fashion sense and beauty, especially in contrast to the extremely manicured images he had previously seen in photoshoots. The pair liked the venue so much, they decided to meet there again for their second date.
Soho House is a members-only club on South Congress Avenue. Unaffiliated visitors will need to find a member to invite them in, unless they want to spend some money; Non-members can book rooms (without the members or friends discount). Unfortunately, just a dinner reservation won't cut it as these are only open for members and their guests.
The venue will be very busy throughout the festival, in part thanks to its reputation as a celebrity hangout spot, but also thanks to some members-only festival programming. More information is available at sohohouse.com.
