What the what...?
Be prepared... to dance! Emergency Preparedness Flash Mob to descend upon CityHall
Move over, Occupy Austin, it's time for the Emergency Preparedness Flash Mob!
Topping the list for the most unexpected things one might dance about in public, Disaster Ready Austin (the hipper side of The City of Austin's Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management) invites you to join their disaster preparedness flash mob to be performed in one week outside of City Hall.
Yes, you read that correctly: Disaster preparedness flash mob.
As in, you learn a dance set to a song about emergency preparation — recorded explicitly for this event — and then you gather with other (joyful? terrified?) dancers to appease the storm gods and spread the word about storing canned goods and sandbags in case of floods, tornadoes or zombies.
If you're like us, you'll watch the videos a few hundred times trying to learn the shockingly on-point lyrics to the song. And by the eighth viewing, you'll already have the dance down cold.
Gather with other (joyful? terrified?) dancers to appease the storm gods and spread the word about storing canned goods and sandbags in case of floods, tornadoes or zombies.
Otherwise, there's a free dance class to learn the flash mob dance this Friday to get explicit instructions on the tricky blade arms and shoulder-dusting involved in the dance. Absolute synchronicity is paramount to a successful flash mob routine, after all!
The last step is showing up at City Hall at 4 p.m. next Wednesday to join the most outstanding dance mob idea ever dreamed up by city government. (Take that, Leslie Knope!)
We might be ruining the surprise for all of the unsuspecting passerby outside of City Hall on that day, but you'll want to spread the word as much as possible for this one. Your mad dance skills could one day save a life.
