Austin golf course scores title from Texas Monthly as one of the state's best
You can't swing a Callaway or TaylorMade in Austin without hitting a great opportunity to golf. No surprise, then, that one of the best golf courses in the Lone Star State is located in the Capital City, according to a new 2023 guide by Texas Monthly.
Texas encompasses the fifth most public golf courses in the country, with about 600 tracks spread out throughout the state. With that in mind, the Texas Monthly team traveled thousands of miles to collect their data about the most unique, reasonably-priced, and accessible golf courses in Texas.
Austin's Roy Kizer Golf Course perfectly fits this criteria, while offering some of the best experiences for players of any skill level. The course opened in 1994 and even with its nearly 30-year history, Texas Monthly says it still maintains that "unpretentious flavor of that smaller-town era."
What sets this course apart, according to assistant managing editor Alicia Maria Meier, is its rich history and the challenges it provides for both beginner and avid golfers.
"The impeccably maintained, links-style course achieves just that with its spacious greens and undulating fairways," wrote Meier. "If your tee shot misses the short stuff (as mine might have more than once), the layout forgives, mostly: it’s easy to find and play your ball, but you’ll have to learn how to chip at odd angles and play from steep knolls."
Roy Kizer is the only course in Austin to make it onto Texas Monthly's list.
