As we head into 2019, CultureMap is looking back at the most popular, the most interesting, and the most captivating stories from the last 12 months. And what better to celebrate than with a sojourn through our best travel stories of the year?

In 2018, we traveled to the outskirts of Big Bend, made pit stops en route to Houston, and even visited the oldest town in Texas. Each destination captured our imaginations, ignited our wanderlust, and reminded us to celebrate this unique state we call home.

Nestled in East Texas is Nacogdoches, a quaint town that also happens to be the oldest town in the state. The four-hour drive from Austin forgoes most highways, instead taking visitors down a tree-lined, two-lane highway.
