Here’s the scoop
Travel + Leisure says this little-known Austin food truck scoops Texas' best ice cream
It’s not Amy’s. It’s not Gelateria Gemelli. It’s not Lick. No, Travel + Leisure magazine has crowned an unassuming and relatively new food trailer in South Austin’s Bouldin Creek neighborhood as the best ice cream shop in Texas.
In its June 23 rundown of the best ice cream shops in the U.S., Travel + Leisure spotlights the large variety of sweet treats at Manolis Ice Cream, Pastries & Cakes, a family-run food truck that opened in February 2018 and is located at 603 W. Live Oak St.
“As the name suggests, this family-run business — operated out of a white trailer — does everything: housemade cakes, pastries, ice pops, and ice cream,” writes author Amy Schulman.
Housed inside a simple food truck in the South First Street District, Manolis is known for concocting all of its goodies in a tiny space and prides itself on making everything “with love and care.”
The assortment of ice cream flavors includes vanilla, strawberry, mint chocolate chip, blackberry, and tiramisu. In the mood for sorbet? Among the flavors are lemon mint, mango, guava, and strawberry lemon. Many of these same flavors pop up in the ice pops, cream pops, and cake pops.
Hungry for something more solid? The selection of cakes and pastries includes Black Forest cake, mousse cheesecake, tiramisu, and tres leches.
Travel + Leisure based its list of the best ice cream shops in each state on a Yelp study of all U.S. businesses in the ice cream, frozen yogurt, and gelato categories. Using an algorithm, Yelp determined the top shop in each state according to the highest number of reviews and the overall star rating.
If this new ranking is any indication, the sweets truck is one of Austin’s few remaining hidden gems.
