Hollywood celebs honor local film community during Texas Film Awards
What: Texas Film Awards
Where: AFS Cinema
The lowdown: On Thursday, March 8, the AFS Cinema in North Austin played host to the 2018 Texas Film Awards. Following a red carpet entrance, local filmmakers, Hollywood stars, Austin Film Society supporters, and special guests gathered in the lobby of the new space to sip wine and mingle among friends.
The ceremony, which was held inside the theater, began with remarks from AFS CEO Rebecca Campbell, who has led the organization since its inception in 2001. Campbell's speech was followed by a lively, lightning speed $30,000 fundraiser led by Texas Tribune CEO Evan Smith, as well as an impassioned speech from Texas filmmaker Augustine Frizzell, who spoke to the importance of providing financial support to the Texas film community. (Frizzel's most recent film, Never Goin' Back, premiered at this year's Sundance and is currently playing at SXSW.)
Oscar nominated Timothée Chalamet, whose appearance was announced only days before, took the stage in honor of his Call Me By Your Name co-star Armie Hammer, the recipient of Variety's One to Watch award. Hammer's brief but funny remarks were followed by a video memorial of director Johnathan Demme from Thandie Newton. (The actress was originally supposed to appear in person, but stayed home in London after her daughter developed appendicitis.)
The Austin Chronicle co-founder Lewis Black also appeared to introduce Richard Linklater and the 2018 Texas Film Hall of Fame inductee, Paul Thomas Anderson.
