Living in Art
Ro Sham Bo: 3 prominent Austin creatives are teaming up to create art you can live in
Home tours like the Austin AIA Homes Tour this weekend can send one into a spiral of depression. "I'll never be able to afford my own 4,000-square-foot, custom-designed home," you think sadly. Luckily, three of Austin's most talented artists — Alyson Fox, ceramicist Keith Kreeger and furniture designer Michael Yates — are teaming up to show that not only can you have nice things, you can live in them, too.
Ro Sham Bo opens Friday, November 1, at Canopy with a celebration 6pm-9pm, sponsored by Tribeza and with bites from Kome. The installation will run through the weekend and then reopen during the East Austin Studio Tour.
Three of Austin's most talented artists — Alyson Fox, Keith Kreeger and Michael Yates — are teaming up to show you that not only can you have nice things, you can live in them, too.
The show creates a home of sorts, a livable installation that merges art and functionality. With Yates' furniture, Kreeger's pottery and Fox's textiles working in conjunction, the three artists hope to elevate how people think about their living spaces.
"We wanted to make a show that's all lifestyle shots [so people can see] how it all works," explains Yates. Chiming in, Kreeger says, "People can't envision [certain things] in their houses. Especially with different styles." Adds Yates, "So we take them there."
Though they may have different styles, Ro Sham Bo seems a natural collaboration for the three creative heavyweights. Fox, who designs everything from textiles to jewelry, has created lines for West Elm and H&M. Kreeger's handmade pottery is highly in demand across the country, and he was recently commissioned to create all of the tableware for qui. Not to be outdone, Yates has seen his exquisitely crafted furniture snapped up by design-savvy customers all over town and was recently featured in The Los Angeles Times.
For the artists, collaborating together came naturally. "[Austin] is small, and people know each other and respect each others work," says Kreeger. "Before you meet someone, you know [who they are], and it's pretty quick that you get to work with people you admire."
Whether you're heading out to AIA Home Tour (sidenote: the tour's only East Austin home is just a few blocks away from Canopy), need inspiration or are just in the market for some really beautiful things, stop by and get an insider's look at work from three of Austin's finest artists.
