Skyspace art stars fête James Turrell for UT installation
James Turrell's Skyspace, The Color Inside, has found a happy home at UT's Student Activity Center (rumor has it that the limited-audience installation atop the building, which is free but often requires advance reservations, is booked through the end of the month), and much credit for bringing the piece to campus is due to Andrée Bober, the founding director of UT's Landmarks Program.
It's also due in part no doubt to the undeniable, unexpected experience of Turrell's work, kicked off in fine fashion by an October private reception for Turrell hosted by UT President Bill Powers.
Attended by more than 200 guests, the event began with remarks and introductions, followed by tours of the new permanent Skyspace, a curvilinear installation equipped with LED lights that project color onto the ceiling and surround an opening in the roof at sunset and sunrise.
Guests included Kyung Turrell, Hiram Butler, Jonathan Bober, Kristin Ellington, Joel Love, Mark Rosen,Dancie Perugini Ware, Josh Pazda and Chris Goins.
Party-goers also enjoyed a performance of Lightscape, a new composition by Joel Love, a Butler School of Music graduate student, assistant instructor and award-winning composer. Love’s composition for string quartet was performed by Butler School of Music students Yunji Lee, Chloe Park, Andrew Haduong and Mic Vredenburgh.
