Dance Another World
Inspirational Austin dance company teaches English through movement
Editor's note: CultureMap is proud to present the latest installment in our partnership with KLRU's documentary series Arts in Context. This unique series celebrates stories about the arts in Austin and the people who make this such a vibrant and creative city.
As a non-native and non-English-speaking girl in America, the world can be a scary place. Dance Another World strives to empower young females with an English immersion program taught through dance. Helping refugees and students from low socioeconomic communities, the program teaches girls storytelling techniques with English as the basis of communication. Students gain confidence by expressing their thoughts and feelings through creative movement. Founded by trained ballerina Dawn Mann, Dance Another World provides a safe environment for girls to learn to respect their bodies, minds, and communities.
