Comedy Dance Party
Monthly comedy show "Mothership" lands tonight at the Spiderhouse Ballroom
As Spider House's big quinceañera celebration approaches, the Central Austin bar-slash-patio-wonderland is starting the party early with the kickoff of Mothership, a new monthly comedy series at the Spider House Ballroom.
The show will be curated and hosted by local comedy collective The New Movement, and each installment will feature special guests and surprises.
Mothership launches this Friday, and while the theater describes the event as a "comedy dance party explosion," there's a lot more to it than sketches and a good DJ—the show starts at 7:30 pm with a free Level Zero (read: total beginner) improv lesson from New Movement performers. Things heat up at 9 pm with a little friendly competition between two good-humored local businesses; this month, it's Tom's Tabooley vs. Food Heads, with teams battling it out Family Fued-style. Survey Says: awesome. At 10:30 pm, The New Movement's house team will present The Megaphone Show, featuring members of the Lonestar Rollergirls. The lovely ladies will tell their craziest rink-related tales, with improvised scenes based on their stories.
While the comedy wraps up around midnight, the party goes on til 2 am, with Spider House DJs spinning tracks til last call.
(Psst: The event is sponsored by Do512, so RSVP over there and get $3 off admission to Mothership!)
