Crafts & Drafts
New Austin company puts a twist on the typical DIY craft night
Have you always dreamed of becoming a master DIY crafter, or at least learning how to stitch a cute potholder or two? Enter Crafts & Drafts, a locally owned business that specializes in hosting craft classes for art newbies. Classes are held at various bars and restaurants around town — because, as we all know, nothing pairs better with Pinterest-worthy crafts than a pint of beer.
Founder Ananda Neureither started Crafts & Drafts in August 2015 as an antidote to popular wine-and-paint parties. “I was on my way to my third or fourth wine-and-paint bachelorette party, and I couldn’t help but think that there’s so many other things you can craft or make,” Neureither says. It wasn’t long before Crafts & Drafts was officially born.
Neureither began teaching classes to small groups in her native Chicago, eventually expanding to the Austin area this past summer. She's held a couple events in town and will be adding more classes this fall. Class sizes are typically around 12-15 people, and a strong emphasis is placed on socializing and getting to know one another.
"I like to keep class sizes more intimate. We really hang out and chat, people share supplies and help each other. I've seen people who were strangers at the beginning exchange numbers and make plans to hang out again," Neureither says.
Craft & Draft classes are held in a different locations, allowing participants the opportunity to get out and explore the city. Crafts range from creating mug and dog leash hangers to seasonable decor items. Neureither has even begun hosting private parties and is also able to customize crafts for attendees.
Novice crafters are more than welcome — as Neureither says, “You don’t need experience to come to one of our parties. We use stencils, and the instructor will walk you through step by step. There are no ‘Pinterest fails’ with us! You’ll definitely walk away from the class and like what you did.”
Crafts & Drafts has an upcoming class on Tuesday, September 26, from 6:30 to 9 pm at Hops & Grain. For a full list of classes, check out the C&D calendar, where you can search according to the specific craft you want to make.
