Body Shift
Inspiring Austin project ensures the power of dance is accessible to all
Editor's note: CultureMap is proud to present the latest installment in our partnership with KLRU's documentary series Arts in Context. This unique series celebrates stories about the arts in Austin and the people who make this such a vibrant and creative city.
Creating “Echo,” an improvisational, site-specific dance, the dancers of this Body Shift Performance Workshop have honed the skill of open awareness. Each individual explores improvisational dance by tuning into his or her own body and choosing a movement that will benefit the design of the whole dance. This allows the dancers freedom to do the dance that only they “know how to do” with the accidental moments of improvisation shining through like hidden gems.
Body Shift is a collaboration of Forklift Danceworks and VSA Texas and offers classes and workshops which empower people of all abilities to embrace dancing in their own unique way.
Body Shift holds donation-based classes as well. Here is the upcoming schedule:
- Saturday, November 21, 2:30 to 4:30 pm – Elements class at the TownLake YMCA
- Saturday, December 12, 2:30 to 4:30 pm – Body Shift/DanceAbility Jam at the TownLake YMCA
- Friday, December 18, 4 to 5:30 pm – DanceAbility Street Parade through downtown
