Texas Performing Arts raises the curtain on 2024-2025 season with David Byrne, Twyla Tharp, and more
It’s an exciting time of year for Austinites of all artistic tastes: While last week saw the always-highly-anticipated ACL lineup drop, this week’s big entertainment news is the 2024-2025 Texas Performing Arts (TPA) season — and the list is as impressive as ever.
As the professional arts presenting and producing program of the University of Texas at Austin, TPA’s public programs bring the best of Broadway to Austin along with a curated selection of international, dance, theatre, and music acts. Most performances take place at the newly renovated Bass Concert Hall, Austin’s largest theatre, with this season’s lineup spotlights 14 boundary-pushing creators who are transforming the traditional performing arts.
"Our 2024/25 season is a convergence of artistic ideas from around the world and our own backyard," said Bob Bursey, Executive & Artistic Director of Texas Performing Arts, via release. "These extraordinary artists invite audiences into a dynamic dialogue of creativity and cultural exchange. We're thrilled to unveil this lineup, offering an adventurous journey through live performance."
With performances spanning music, theatre, dance, and immersive experiences, this season includes both legendary artists and new faces on the forefront of contemporary performance. Highlights include the return of choreographer Twyla Tharp to Austin; a new staging of Considering Matthew Shephard from Grammy Award-winning choral ensemble Conspirare; an immersive music and dance event from David Byrne’sSOCIAL! Dance Club; and five Texas premieres from TPA’s ongoing partnership with Fusebox.
Other highlights include:
- An Austin residency from revered saxophonist and bandleader Branford Marsalis, appearing with the UT Jazz Orchestra for a special performance and two shows with his quartet in partnership with ATX Chamber Music & Jazz;
- The return of world-renowned a cappella group Sweet Honey in the Rock to Bass Concert Hall with a jubilant tribute to five decades of vocal empowerment and artistic excellence;
- Andrew Schneider’sN O W I S W H E N W E A R E (the stars), which brings the viewer into a field of 4,000 points of light and 496 channels of surround sound for an introspective, awe-inspiring theatrical cosmos;
- and many more exceptional artists and projects.
Additionally, TPA continues its commitment to fostering new works with the commissioning of Postcards from the Border, a multidisciplinary collaboration with Austin singer-songwriter Carrie Rodriguez, acclaimed novelist Oscar Cásares, and photographer Joel Salcido. Premiering in January 2025, this multifaceted project will explore the rich cultural tapestry of the Texas-Mexico border through music, stories, and images.
