Weekend Roundup
Beer, veggies or both?: Plenty of festivals still to be had in Austin thisweekend
Just because SXSW is over and done doesn't mean you can't find a festival atmosphere with free food, drink and live music. This is Austin, after all, and that means we know how to keep the party going all year round. So whatever your tastes and sensibilities, here's our suggestions of where to spend your last lovely weekend in March.
First up, get your smooth groove on at the Austin Urban Music Festival over at Auditorium Shores. We love a good music festival, and you've got plenty of opportunity to catch some of the hottest touring acts in R&B, hip hop and rap as well as some pretty amazing 90s throwbacks right here in Austin. I mean, Boyz II Men and Kenny "Babyface" Edmonds" are playing on Saturday night, so you literally have no excuse not to come sing along.
The Festival coincides with the weekend of the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays, the annual track and field competition for high school and college athletes, held at UT's Mike A. Myer's Stadium. With over 200 university competitors, 630 high school competitors and 135 invitational athletes, this event is a huge draw to the city, and an opportunity to see some Olympic-level action on and around the field. Events are scheduled through Saturday evening, so you'll want to avoid that section of I-35 if you enjoy your free time.
On Saturday, the Travis County Expo Center — hopefully free of the rodeo smell — will be hosting the next Austin Beer Festival, featuring 500 craft and import beers and plenty of entertainment, sponsors and, of course, samples. Live music is provided by bands like 10 Years, The 71's, No Such Thing and The Live Lights, and there's even a sponsored Beer Pong & Flip Cup Tournament to finally prove your skills whilst tipsy. Clearly, this is a party for the 21+ crowd, and only for serious connoisseurs. Get their early and you'll get a free mug and souvenir shot glass... and more time to drink beer.
If you're more of the hippie, veggie variety, there's a brand new festival this year with you in mind as well. The Texas Veg Fest is a brand new day-long celebration of all things healthy and mindful for you and your family, put on over at Fiesta Gardens. With over 100 vendors handing out free samples(!) and guest speakers like Terry Hope Romero sharing their tips for healthy living, you'll come away with bags of goodies, awareness of new products and hopefully some fantastic new recipes to try.
There are also plenty of great live theatre options this weekend courtesy of the strong new work theatre community in Austin. Breaking String Theater's The Schooling of Bento Bonchev tells a unique tale of running away from love at The Off Center. Glass Half Full Theatre combines body and shadow puppetry in a beautiful ecological meditation piece called The Orchid Flotilla, playing at Salvage Vanguard Theater. Meanwhile, at the Blue Theatre, Shrewd Productions presents Jenny Connel's The Dragon Play, which combines literal and figurative explorations of, y'know, dragons. And while it's not brand brand new, we're also going to give a shout out to Hyde Park Theatre's The Aliens, with its dynamic portrayal of a totally ordinary day in the life of two slackers.
Finally, on Sunday, Animal Trustees of Austin invite you to join them at the AT&T Conference Center for their annual Spring art show, Petcasso. Yep, that's spelled right. This is a live auction fundraiser where folks can view and bid on artwork made by acclaimed artists and some four-legged artists as well. L Style G Style's Lynn Yeldell and Alisa Weldon are hosting the fancy dinner and fundraiser, and you'll have plenty of opportunities to give to this organization that provides health care to animals that would not otherwise receive it.
Are you ready to keep the party going? Get out there and have fun this weekend. Support your local businesses and nonprofits with your attendance and participation. These festivals can't make it without your help. And you can't get all the free stuff they're giving out if you don't show up. See how that works?
Be safe, be smart and be kind to one another. See ya next weekend!
