Austin mayor asks locals to make welcome kits for Hurricane Harvey evacuees
KVUE — Austin Mayor Steve Adler is asking Austin residents to welcome evacuees to the city by donating "welcome kits" filled with several items.
Adler posted a Facebook Live video demonstrating which items should go in the kit. He hopes Austinites will donate 6,000 kits for the Austin Disaster Relief Network.
"Alright Austin, we have company coming, we have some guests, so there are chores we need to do so that we can get ready and we can welcome folks the way they deserve to be welcomed to our city," Adler said. "So if you want to help, I have something real specific you can do to help us."
The kits should go into a plastic box with a lid or a reusable bag. Kits should contain:
- New towels and washcloths
- Soap
- Tissue
- Toothbrush and toothpaste
- Deodorant
- Feminine products
- Shampoo
- Comb
- A note of encouragement
Other helpful items include:
- New pillow
- New blanket
- Wipes
- Baby bottles/formula
- Diapers
- Baby food
