The Mean Green
Texas football stadium scores a touchdown in this unique poll
Here’s something football fans can cheer about: University of North Texas' Apogee Stadium scores the top spot among the "greenest" college football stadiums in the country.
A new list from LawnStarter appropriately ranks the home of the Mean Green the greenest of them all. For starters, 4-year-old Apogee is the only college football stadium with LEED Platinum certification, thanks to elements like wind turbines that provide energy and recycling of construction waste.
Additionally, notes LawnStarter, more than half of the stadium site incorporates landscaping that’s native to North Texas. Apogee reduces water consumption by more than 50 percent by using low-flow plumbing fixtures (sinks, toilets, and showers).
Also on the list, at No. 4, is TCU’s Amon G. Carter Stadium. The home of the Horned Frogs earned Silver LEED certification for its recent $164 million renovation, which included numerous energy-saving improvements related to lighting.
Two other college football stadiums get props for going green: California Memorial Stadium at the University of California-Berkeley and TCF Bank Stadium at the University of Minnesota.
