Mopac Closures
Get ready for more Mopac closures in 2014
KVUE — Expect more road closures next week on Mopac as the highway improvement project moves forward. Many drivers on Mopac Expressway are seeing double. As part of the improvement project, crews have restriped parts of the highway heading south, but the black paint over the old stripes can still be seen.
Steve Pustelnyk is the spokesperson for the Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority (CTRMA) in charge of the project. "We're aware of that, and if we need to take additional action to improve the striping, we're going to do that," said Pustelnyk.
Some drivers, like Yannet Vives, think the restriping makes the lanes narrower. "Yeah, especially when you're driving near a big truck it just feels kind of crowded," said Vives.
It’s short-term aggravation to fix a long-term problem: congestion on Mopac.
Once complete in late 2015, the highway will include a new express toll lane. It cannot come fast enough, said driver Miranda Fontaine. "We just don't have enough infrastructure to support all the people who drive in this town," Fontaine said.
Next week, more lane closures will add to the traffic. On Jan. 2 and 3, some northbound lanes on Mopac will close for restrpping from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. between RM 2222 and Steck Avenue.
