Austin Pets Alive! opens new life-saving transport hub for pets in need
Austin Pets Alive! (APA!) is taking another huge step toward saving as many pets in Texas as possible, recently announcing a new APA! Transport Hub in Elgin, Texas. The new hub will allow APA! to save even more lives from under-resourced rural Texas shelters by connecting them to other shelters around the country with more space and higher adoption demand.
The new facility serves as a stopover for pets who have been rescued from euthanasia and are on their way to other safe havens across the nation. Thanks to a $3.85 million grant from Best Friends Animal Society, APA! will be able to expand support to surrounding Texas communities with the goal of saving an additional 8,000 dogs and cats in the next three years.
The APA! Transport Program was born in 2021 when APA! saw an opportunity to utilize its No-Kill network to transport at-risk animals out of state after Winter Storm Uri.
“Our transport program helps connect under-resourced shelters in Texas with communities up north, helping enhance local lifesaving programs,” said Clare Callison, Senior Director of Care Operations at APA! in a release. “With the help of this grant and Best Friends Animal Society, we can help close the gap and help rural shelters save more lives.”
According to recent data from Best Friends Animal Society, 74,495 dogs and cats were unnecessarily killed in Texas shelters in 2023—making it the highest shelter-killing state in the country last year.
Nonetheless, Texas also saw the largest decrease in shelter deaths. The APA! Transport Program is just one of the organization’s ongoing efforts to expand its no-kill services through the state: In 2023, the program moved 2,676 animals from 74 source shelters to 65 destination partners across the country and as far as Ontario, Canada.
"Transports are an important tool to increase lifesaving," said Sophia Proler, Director, Best Friends Animal Society, via release. "We know everything's bigger in Texas, including the number of dogs and cats looking for loving homes of their own. Best Friends is happy and eager to help APA! facilitate these trips to save more dogs and cats."
In late April, APA! volunteers and staff members worked with Dog is My Copilot to transport 28 dogs and 17 cats from the new hub to partner shelters in Colorado, Idaho, and Washington. It was the first of what will be many life-saving flights for the sake of at-risk Texas pets.
