Austin lives it up as No. 7 most fun American city in new list
From visiting museums, to attending popular music festivals, to finding a new favorite place to eat, there's plenty to do around Austin that makes it an entertaining place to live. But there's plenty more to do around the city that helped it earn its top 10 rank in WalletHub's new list of the "Most Fun Cities in America" in 2023.
The study compared 182 U.S. cities across 65 metrics to determine the level of "fun" for each city. The metrics were split between three main categories: entertainment and recreation, nightlife and parties, and cost. Each city was evaluated based on the number of attractions per capita, nightlife activities per capita, and the average prices for eating at a restaurant or buying a movie ticket, and much more.
Austin's fun-loving No. 7 rank in 2023 mirrors a separate WalletHub study that ranked Texas the No. 7 most fun U.S. state. The state capital joined the likes of several popular U.S. destinations, such as Las Vegas, Nevada (No. 1); Chicago, Illinois (No. 8); Honolulu, Hawaii (No. 9); and New York, New York (No. 10).
Austin's overall nightlife and parties rank was No. 7, earning special recognition for having the ninth highest number of dance clubs per capita. In the category for entertainment and recreation, Austin ranked No. 20 with the 14th highest number of restaurants and attractions per capita. And although the high-density party pockets aren't always pretty, even the famous 6th Street is getting cleaned up.
The category that Austin performed the worst in is (predictably) costs, where the city ranked No. 87 out of the total 182 cities. Austin is well-known for being the most expensive city in Texas to spend a night out, and the 3rd worst in the nation.
Newcomers should definitely do their research before deciding to move to a city like Austin, rather than basing their decision on the few fun trips they've taken over the course of a few days. And as WalletHub analyst Cassandra Happe explains, it's important to learn more about a city and how it matches someone's "unique brand of fun."
"All cities have a variety of activities, but some shine more than others when it comes to things like parks and beaches, live music and comedy, partying, sports culture or fine dining,” Happe says. "Picking a city to spend a weekend in is easy, but moving to a city where you’ll have fun on a regular basis requires more research."
Other fun-filled Texas cities that earned spots in the top 100 of WalletHub's list include Houston (No. 19), San Antonio (No. 25), Dallas (No. 31), Fort Worth (No. 43), El Paso (No. 59), Plano (No. 71), Arlington (No. 75), and Corpus Christi (No. 92).
