The Pop Almanac Podcast #17: TV Hosts/Portlandia
This week on The Pop Almanac we're sick of Ricky Gervais! Seriously, can he stop giving interviews about how great he is? Brendan and Duncan pick apart how mean his brand of humor has gotten since the end of the British Office (which worked, in part, because he was the butt of the joke), in the wake of his third "controversial" hosting performance at the Golden Globes.
But one host no one should be sick of is Stephen Colbert, who is fast becoming a real world character, in addition to a character on Comedy Central's The Colbert Report and (presumably) a person in real life. Your hosts analyze the way that the Report has evolved well past sister program The Daily Show, and wonder what the future holds in store for South Carolina's newest presidential candidate.
Finally, IFC's Portlandiahas returned to much acclaim, and every Austinite should be a fan based on the similar vibe of both cities. But does the sketch comedy show lovingly skewer hipsters or just make fun of them? Are there non-hipster fans of Portlandia, who find it funnny without living at an epicenter of indie ambition as we all do?
All these questions, and a lengthy tangent about the current season of Saturday Night Live. Don't miss it!
