this weekend in austin
Jacuzzi Boys on fuzzy, hook-heavy rock, scandalous fan videos and the Floridascene
As the last shreds of Austin’s blink-and-you’ll-miss-it winter fade away, it’s time to throw on records that remind us of sun, fun and lazy days. Luckily, Miami garage-pop rockers Jacuzzi Boys will be breezing through town this Saturday with King Khan & The Shrines.
Their latest album, Glazin, boasts hypnotically catchy guitar hooks layered with fuzzy vocals and plenty of tambourine to perfectly soundtrack your weekend (and probably your spring and summer, too).
This current mini-tour is also a mini-reunion for Jacuzzi Boys and headliner King Khan, explains bassist Danny Gonzales.
“The first time we went cross country was with the Shrines, then we toured with King Khan & BBQ that same year,“ he says.
Jacuzzi Boys – “Vizcaya”
Together since 2007, the trio (Gabriel Alcala on guitar, Diego Monasteri on drums and Gonzales on bass) released several albums on Orlando-based label Florida’s Dying before becoming a part of Hozac Records’ inaugural 7” series, the Hookup Klub. After putting out a few more 7”s — including a split with former Austin psych rockers Woven Bones (we miss you, Woven Bones!) — Jacuzzi Boys released their first full length, No Seasons, in 2009.
They’ve followed that critically acclaimed debut with several singles, a live album, more collabs (Nobunny! Vivian Girls! Turbo Fruits!) and, last year, their latest LP was released on Hardly Art. Pretty prolific for a band whose practice space provides plenty of distractions, located on an actual beach in Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park.

“I’d say over a year we’re probably home more than we’re gone,” says Gonzales of the band’s touring strategy. “This one’s actually quite short, just around 10 days. For the past two years, we’d kind of do one long tour and a few other trips. This year we we won’t do much touring; we’re just doing this, and we go to Europe in late March for a month.”
Being headquartered in Miami, a town known more for partying and serious tanning than underground rock, means that time between tours is more often spent working on material than playing out.
“It’s definitely different than any other place — there’s not some huge scene," Gonzales says. "Most major cities have a ton of bands and a ton of places to play, bands constantly coming through, and it’s not like that. You’re kind of more isolated, people just kind of do their own thing. But I was born and raised in Miami, and the two other guys were basically raised here. We definitely like to travel but I couldn’t see us, as a band, relocating. That’s just our spot.”
Jacuzzi Boys – “Automatic Jail”
The scene being scattered hasn’t prevented Jacuzzi Boys from amassing an incredibly dedicated fan base — and some hardcore admirers, like anonymous group Jacuzzi Gals, who released a (totally NSFW) tribute video for the single “Glazin.”
“I think it’s going to be hard for any other fans to outdo that,” says Gonzales of the clip, which features what can only be described as “vagina puppetry.”
“We don’t them, we don’t know what’s up with them really. They’ve never introduced themselves to us or anything, they just made that and reached out to us,” he explains. “I think I prefer it that way, just to keep a bit of mystery.”
They’ve got more important things to worry about, anyways — like a new album.

“I think that’s why we’re not going to tour too much for the rest of the year,” says Gonzales. “We’re doing this tour, then hopefully SXSW, then Europe, then after that we’re just going to take a time out and really focus on writing stuff and getting ready to record.”
But before they can get started, they’ve got a tour to wrap up — and some spicy snacks to track down here in town.
“Last time we were in Austin, we played at Red 7 and right down the street there was this little restaurant,” Gonzales recalls. “I can’t remember what it’s called, but we ate this amazingly spicy tuna. I’d kind of like to go back there, I wish I could remember the name of the place — it was delicious.”
If you’ve got restaurant recs for the band, leave ‘em in the comments, and don’t forget to pick up a ticket to the show, this Saturday at the Mohawk.
