Austin reels in Hollywood stars for dazzling Texas Film Awards celebration
It is truly a golden year for the Austin Film Society, and the organization is rustlin' up a little Hollywood glamor for the occasion. This year's Texas Film Awards, hosted at Austin Studios on Thursday, March 12, will include movie stars, Grammy Award-nominated musicians, and more sparkling surprises.
For the 20th anniversary of the awards, held of course in 2020, AFS will honor Kaitlyn Dever with the Rising Star Award. Dever, who was raised in Dallas, co-starred in the Olivia Wilde-directed Booksmart, one of 2019's delightful breakout hits. Dever also starred in the acclaimed Netflix miniseries Unbelievable, based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning story about a teenager who reports a rape only to recant it after police say they don't believe her. Dever received a Golden Globe and Critic's Choice nomination for her performance.
Her Texas Film Award isn't Dever's first rising star accolade. The 23-year-old was also given the Hollywood Critics Association's 2020 Breakthrough Artist Under the Age of 23 and was named a BAFTA Rising Star Nominee.
Emceeing the evening will be Parker Posey, who starred in AFS founder Richard Linklater's Dazed and Confused and Suburbia, among dozens of other films. And leading the band that evening is none other than Austin's own Adrian Quesada, fresh off a Best New Artist Grammy nod for his newest band, Black Pumas.
As the ceremony date approaches, the Texas Film Awards promise even more stars and surprises. (In 2018, the awards announced Timothee Chalamet, Thandie Newton, Regina Hall, and Linklater would appear just days before the ceremony.)
“We are preparing for a banner year in March, with the awards showcasing the art and craft of film and television as one of Texas’ most important exports to the world,” said Rebecca Campbell, CEO of AFS, in a release. “2020 also marks the 35th Anniversary of the Austin Film Society, and the Texas Film Awards will be a celebratory kick off to another milestone year in AFS’s history, as we continue to build Austin’s film culture and film production ecosystem.”
Along with the awards ceremony, the evening includes a red carpet event, cocktail hour, and dinner. The ceremony itself will take place on Austin Studios' newly renovated Stage 7. Tickets include the $25,000 Producer's Table, the $10,000 Director's Table, and the $1,000 Star Ticket. For more information and to purchase, head here.
