A new study ranking the coolest cities in America has revealed Austin didn't even scrape into the top 10.
The survey by British gambling company Betway.com placed Austin in the No. 11 spot after analyzing the 50 most populated cities across the U.S. and Canada, ranking them on factors associated with "being cool."
Though Austin didn't make it into the top 10, it still ranked higher than Dallas (No. 14), which was the only other Texas city named in the report (meaning Houston was thoroughly snubbed).
Boston, Massachusetts claimed the title as the coolest city in America, followed by Las Vegas, Nevada (No. 2), and Porland, Oregon (No. 3).
The rankings were determined based on seven "coolness" factors including the median age of residents, the number of tattoo parlors, record stores, upcoming music events, street art murals, and vegan/vegetarian restaurants each city has.
"What makes a city cool often goes beyond its reputation or famous landmarks – it’s the unique blend of culture that provides the energy," the report's author wrote. "From thriving music scenes and vibrant street art to foodie hotspots and inclusive, laid-back vibes, the coolest cities offer something authentic, exciting, and effortlessly memorable."
Austin certainly tries to live up to its nickname as "The Live Music Capital of the World," but the report also calls out several other factors that influence the city's culture, such as its indie music scene and its foodie-friendliness.
"[Austin is] a haven for food lovers too, offering 50 dietary-friendly restaurants and 5 hidden gem spots per capita," the report said. "With 36 upcoming music events and 7 tattoo parlors, Austin lives up to its reputation as a lively destination."
The report mentions "youthful energy" in some of its top 10 write-ups, but the median age only covers a range of about seven years. Austinites know that younger doesn't mean cooler.
This city treasures cultural icons like Willie Nelson, who just turned 92 this week; his favorite roadie, Benjamin H. Dorcy, III, who was featured in a buzzy documentary that premiered over the weekend; and an endless list of touring acts with careers of 20-plus years that are still going strong. That's not even to mention Austin's local legends who never hit the mainstream.
