Summer Film Series
Austin Sound and Cinema brings classic movies and live music to Long Center lawn
Live music, a classic flick and the setting sun. Pair this combination with the backdrop of the Austin skyline and you've got the recipe for a quintessential summer experience. That's the plan for Austin Sound and Cinema, a new summer series from the folks at Do512 and the Alamo Drafthouse, presented by Aquasana.
Sound and Cinema — a free, all ages event — will take place on alternating Wednesdays throughout the summer. The public is encouraged to gather on the lawn of the Long Center for an evening that will pair local live music with an iconic film screening shown on the Drafthouse's giant inflatable screen. "Our goal was to create a free, city-wide public event for all ages so that Austin can count on something awesome going on all summer long," says Do512's Ross Bennett.
Before the show starts, guests can mill about the space, sampling food from the likes of Frank, Blue Ox and Whole Foods and sipping on refreshing beer, wine and cocktails (and free Aquasana water). The series kicks off Wednesday, June 5 with a screening of Labyrinth and — what else — a performance by David Bowie cover band, Super Creeps.
Here's the full summer lineup:
June 5: Labyrinth, featuring live music by Super Creeps, Austin’s best David Bowie tribute band.
June 19:Smokey and the Bandit, featuring songs about the road from Whiskey Shivers.
July 17:Back to the Future, featuring live music by Hello Wheels, playing hits from the '50s and '80s.
July 31: School of Rock, featuring the Zeppelin Show performed by Will Taylor & Strings Attached.
August 14:Flash Gordon, featuring live music with Magnifico, the greatest Queen cover band you’ll ever experience.
August 21: Jurassic Park, featuring a music guest to be announced later this summer.
During Austin Sound and Cinema, food trailers will open at 7 p.m., with the sundown concerts beginning at 8 p.m. Films start after it gets dark. More information is available on the series' Facebook page.
