Alamo Drafthouse rolls out new film-a-day program for Austin movie lovers
With a slate of upcoming summer blockbusters that includes Spider-Man: Far From Home, Top Gun: Maverick, and a reboot of horror classic The Grudge, chances are Austinites will wind up in an Alamo Drafthouse sometime in the next few months. And now locals will have an even more cinematic summer thanks to the theater’s brand-new season pass program.
According to a release, the program will work similarly to well-known services like MoviePass. Those selected to participate can pay a set monthly fee for access to one film per day at any Austin location. Since the season pass is still in its beta phase, the exact cost is undetermined, and will shift as Alamo tests different features and price points.
To be eligible for the service, movie buffs must sign up for the theater’s free rewards program, Alamo Victory. Once registered, Austinites can then sign up for the waitlist.
Season pass pioneers will be selected at random from the list regardless of when they signed up. Once a guest receives an emailed invitation (what? no stationary?), they will have two weeks to decide whether or not they want to purchase.
Once the pass is activated, guests will be able to skip the box office and select a film of their choice. Tickets are unlocked via the iOS or Android apps and then shown to the servers directly from a guest’s phone.
There are, of course, a few caveats to the program. Firstly, the season pass will also only be good for plain ol' 2D movies. Special screenings like Rolling Roadshow productions, the chain's popular interactive Movie Parties, and 3D films are not be eligible or require an additional fee. As Mick Jagger so capably reminds us, “you can’t always get what you want.”
Those who do not luck out on the lottery will eventually get to join in on the fun. Exactly when is anyone's guess. The release would only say an infuriatingly vague "soon."
