Alamo Drafthouse recreates the drive-in movie experience with new RollingRoadshow series

There’s something so attractive about drive-in theaters. Maybe it’s the scene in The Outsiders where Ponyboy first starts his relationship with Cherry Valance, or maybe it’s that sense of reverence for the automobile that was so prevalent in the '50s when drive-in theaters were most popular.
Whatever it is, drive-in theaters evoke an undeniably American feeling that, due to progression inside of the modern Cineplex, most moviegoers have never experienced — including myself.
Drafthouse will showcase four beloved pictures about hitting the open road — The Legend of Billie Jean, Wild at Heart, Twister and Thelma and Louise — in a drive-in movie format.
Thankfully, Alamo Drafthouse has applied its uncanny knack for hosting unforgettable movie-experience events to recreate the drive-in of yesteryear. Beginning Nov. 10 and running every Saturday until Dec. 1, the Drafthouse will screen a road-themed movie at Spiderwood Studios in Utley, Texas (45 minutes east of Austin) using the classic drive-in style, and offering patrons a chance to experience a bygone American tradition.
Part of the Drafthouse’s long-running Rolling Roadshow series, Road Rage Drive-In 2012 will showcase four beloved pictures about hitting the open road — The Legend of Billie Jean, Wild at Heart, Twister and Thelma and Louise. A fitting them for a Rolling Roadshow event, the premise is made even stronger by the decision to host it in a drive-in format.
And, in true Texas fashion, there will be barbecue — Franklin BBQ to be more specific. The Drafthouse is doing something even Franklin himself can’t do: guaranteeing your chance to taste some of this nationally-recognized ‘cue. That’s right, no need to line up at 10 a.m. just for the chance at tasting the award winning meats.
For an $18 ticket, the Drafthouse will allow you and your car admittance to the screening, as well as a guaranteed Tipsy Texan sandwich, Franklin’s succulent combination of brisket, sausage and coleslaw. If for some reason you don’t want that delicious-sounding sandwich, there is also a $10 admittance-only ticket option. But who would pass on famous barbecue?
Cars, action packed adventure, Texas barbecue and part of American history that has gone to the wayside: Alamo Drafthouse’s Road Rage Drive-In 2012 will be a movie-going experience that cannot be missed.
The Road Rage Drive-In 2012 schedule is as follows:
Nov. 10:The Legend of Billie Jean (with Barry Tubb in attendance)
Nov. 17:Wild at Heart
Nov. 24:Twister
Dec. 1:Thelma and Louise
Doors open at 4 p.m., with the films starting around 6 p.m.
